Intelligence is something we look for in our fellow human beings. We tend to gravitate towards people in a similar ‘bracket’. We don’t want to be made to look less intelligent than we are, and we may not have much in common with those who we consider ‘less intelligent’.
It’s a little judgmental, sure, but we all do it, even if we don't realize it. Another thing we like to do is to rank the intelligence of various species.
“Cats are so much smarter than dogs!”
“Yeah? Well I saw a chimpanzee play chess!”
“Okay, sure, but I saw a raccoon figure out a padlock/eye scan lock on our garbage cans.”
And so on.
Is it silly? A little. Still, let’s delve into the smartest breeds in the world. This list ranks breeds based on their understanding of new commands (fewer than 5 repetitions) and obeying first command 95% of the time or better and comes for the book The Intelligence of Dogs by Stanley Coren.
That’s a pretty solid list of smart dogs. Did your pooch mack the cut? Don't worry if they didn't. We don't discriminate. We love all our dog breeds. Smarty Pants and Not Quite as Smarty Pants alike (looking at you Shih Tzus).
