8 Little Things You've Always Wanted to Know About Italian Greyhounds

The Italian greyhound is a regal breed but today on World of Angus, we're here to fill you in on some of their quirks and perhaps some little unknown facts:

1. This breed is considered to be small
It’s true - the Italian greyhound is considered to be the smallest in the family of Gazehounds and is said to look like a miniature greyhound, which makes them a suitable family pet.

2. Italian greyhounds inspire others
This breed has long been a popular choice of painters in the Renaissance ages such as Giotto, David, Bosch, and Carpaccio appearing in several paintings.

3. Always curious and loves company
Yes, some might say that the Italian greyhound breed could be nosey but in reality, they are just curious wanting to explore everything around them. These dogs have large personalities and love to play with others.

4. Not just from Italy
Although the Italian greyhound is believed to have originated from Italy, there are reports that more than 2,000 years ago in the Mediterranean Basin, these greyhounds were spotted in Greece and Turkey.

5. Royal roots
Known for their elegance, the Italian greyhound has had popular roots with the Royal Family. It’s even been reported that Queen Victoria and Catherine the Great had one!

6. Best coat
If you’re looking for a dog that sheds less than most dogs - then the Italian greyhound may be the dog for you. They need very little grooming because they have hardly any hair

7. For your health
This breed is more prone to health issues, as their bones are so fragile, so leg breaks and knee issues are something to watch out for.

8. Great for therapy
Some has talked about how this breed make excellent therapy dogs for the elderly and those in healing. With their ability to create constant comfort, we’d have to agree!
